When we say to read the sounds that letters “usually make,” we are saying to read the vowels’ “short” sounds, in other words /ăăă/, /ĕĕĕ/, /ĭĭĭ/, /ŏŏŏ/, and /ŭŭŭ/.

This is the first task in which students read -VCe pattern words in a serif font without seeing them in the specialized orthography first. At this point though, you read each word aloud first before the student reads it.
