# Cycle 172

## 172.1 Letter Combinations

#### Purpose and Procedure

This task requires students to read words that contain the minor *ea* sound without being asked to identify the letter combination or its sound before reading the word.

## 172.4 Patterns

#### Purpose and Procedure

Students read derivatives of -VC and -VCe base words with the vowel underlined, but this time you do not guide them to notice whether there is a single or double letter after the vowel. If they make an error, follow the correction text to guide them through that process.

#### Correcting the Student

❖ If the student makes an error, use these prompts to guide them:

a. Point to the underlined letter…

b. Does a single letter or a double letter come after it?…

c. So should you read this letter’s name or the sound that it usually makes?…

d. And what does that sound like?…

e. Try the whole word again…
