Cycle 167
167.1 Letter Combinations
Purpose and Procedure
This task requires students to read simple words containing the ue or ew letter combination after they identify the letter combination and its sound.
167.4 Patterns
Purpose and Procedure
This task returns to derivatives of -VC and -VCe base words that have the vowel of the base word underlined. It is the first in a series of five tasks that begin with one page dedicated to one of the vowels (in this case, it is a) where you ask the student how they would read that letter if double or single letters come after it. After that page, you read derivatives of -VC and -VCe base words, pointing out their single or double letters and how that affects the vowel sound, before the student reads them.
167.7 Word Parts
Purpose and Procedure
In this task, students learn other meanings for the beginnings under- and over-. In this previous cycle, they learned that under- means "below" or "beneath" and that over- means "above" or "beyond" (literal meanings). This time, they learn that under- also can mean "not enough" and over- also can mean "too much" (figurative meanings).
