# Cycle 167

## 167.1 Letter Combinations

#### Purpose and Procedure

This task requires students to read simple words containing the *ue* or *ew* letter combination after they identify the letter combination and its sound.

## 167.4 Patterns

#### Purpose and Procedure

This task returns to derivatives of -VC and -VCe base words that have the vowel of the base word underlined. It is the first in a series of five tasks that begin with one page dedicated to one of the vowels (in this case, it is *a*) where you ask the student how they would read that letter if double or single letters come after it. After that page, you read derivatives of -VC and -VCe base words, pointing out their single or double letters and how that affects the vowel sound, before the student reads them.

## 167.7 Word Parts

#### Purpose and Procedure

In this task, students learn other meanings for the beginnings *under-* and *over-.* In this previous cycle, they learned that *under-* means "below" or "beneath" and that *over-* means "above" or "beyond" (literal meanings). This time, they learn that *under-* also can mean "not enough" and *over-* also can mean "too much" (figurative meanings).
