# Cycle 136

## 136.1 Letter Combinations

#### Purpose and Procedure

This task requires students to read simple words containing the *al* letter combination after they identify the letter combination and its sound.

## 136.4 Patterns

#### Purpose and Procedure

This task focuses on adding the suffix *-ness* to the end of -VCe pattern words. This is an auditory exercise that lays the groundwork for reading words like these later.

## 136.6 Story Reading

#### Purpose and Procedure

This is the first task in which the *au* and *aw* letter combinations appear in story text (underlined for now). This is also the first task in which the *igh* letter combination is not underlined.

## 136.7 Word Parts

#### Purpose and Procedure

This task introduces the *-er* and *-ist* endings and how those endings change a base word to mean the person who does what that word is or who works with what that word is (converting it to an agent noun, an entity who performs that action). For example, a drummer is a person who drums and a cartoonist is a person who draws cartoons.

In this task, you say all of the endings and words first and have the student repeat them. Students do not read any of them on their own. You also ask students at various times how they think the endings change the meaning of the words.
