108.4 Patterns -VCe
Purpose and Procedure
This is the first task in which students will read -VCe pattern words (in a serif font) in which the vowel that changes its sound is u.
These examples are more challenging than cases with a, i, or o because the u can make one of two sounds in -VCe pattern words: /ū/ as in cube or /ꝏ/ as in tube.
Correcting the Student
The following is the correction text to use if a student makes a mistake in this type of Patterns -VCe task:
❖ If the student makes an error, use these prompts to guide them:
a. Does this word have an e at the end?…
b. So, should we read this letter’s name or the sound that it usually makes?…
c. So, what sound should we read when we get here?…
d. Try the whole word again…
e. Remember, when an e at the end of the word tells us to read the name of the letter u, we often have to read an /ထ/ sound instead of saying /ū/ exactly.
f. My turn to read it slowly… Let’s read it slowly together… Your turn to read it slowly…
