## 108.1 Letter Combinations

#### Purpose and Procedure

This task requires students to read multisyllabic words containing the *or* letter combination. Students are not asked to identify the letter combination or its sound before reading the word.

## 108.4 Patterns -VCe

#### Purpose and Procedure

This is the first task in which students will read -VCe pattern words (in a serif font) in which the vowel that changes its sound is *u*.&#x20;

These examples are more challenging than cases with *a*, *i*, or *o* because the *u* can make one of two sounds in -VCe pattern words: /ū/ as in *cube* or /ꝏ/ as in *tube*.

#### Correcting the Student

The following is the correction text to use if a student makes a mistake  in this type of *Patterns -VCe* task:

a. <mark style="color:purple;">Does this word have an</mark> <mark style="color:purple;"></mark>*<mark style="color:purple;">e</mark>* <mark style="color:purple;"></mark><mark style="color:purple;">at the end?…</mark>

b. <mark style="color:purple;">So, should we read this letter’s name or the sound that it usually makes?…</mark>

c. <mark style="color:purple;">So, what sound should we read when we get here?…</mark>

d. <mark style="color:purple;">Try the whole word again…</mark>

**e.&#x20;**<mark style="color:purple;">**Remember, when an**</mark><mark style="color:purple;">**&#x20;**</mark>*<mark style="color:purple;">**e**</mark>*<mark style="color:purple;">**&#x20;**</mark><mark style="color:purple;">**at the end of the word tells us to read the name of the letter**</mark><mark style="color:purple;">**&#x20;**</mark>*<mark style="color:purple;">**u**</mark>*<mark style="color:purple;">**, we often have to read an /ထ/ sound instead of saying /ū/ exactly.**</mark>
