## 18.2 The Slow-Fast Game

#### Purpose and Procedure

The last word in this task is the word *he*. When you say *he* the slow way, treat the /h/ sound as a quick sound, saying it fast. (Do not hold it for two seconds.)

If students run out of air before they can say *he* the slow way, ask them to take a deep breath before saying it.

Although the /h/ sound is technically considered to be a continuous fricative, in this curriculum we treat it as a quick sound. It is useful to teach /h/ as a quick sound because it provides a gentler on-ramp to learning how to read words that begin with other quick sounds. That is why, later in the curriculum, the first word we ask students to read that begins with a quick sound is *hat*.

## 18.5 Finger Tracking

#### Purpose and Procedure

This task introduces students to tracking their fingers across two lines of text when all of the images on the lines are already displayed.
