# Cycle 145

## 145.1 Letter Combinations

#### Purpose and Procedure

This task requires students to read words that contain the *ph* letter combination without being asked to identify the letter combination or its sound before reading the word.

## 145.7 Word Parts

#### Purpose and Procedure

This task introduces students to the *-ous* ending. Students learn that words with the *-ous* ending describe someone or something (turning a noun into an adjective).

In the first part of the task, you transform words with the *-tion* ending, like *caution*, into words with the *-ous* ending, like *cautious*. These words are challenging and students are only meant to touch and repeat them, not read them. Be sure to speak the words clearly so they can do so successfully. After students repeat a word, you say a sentence that illustrates the meaning of the ending, like, "A cautious driver is a driver who uses caution." Students may not understand the meaning of the words or the sentences in the first part of the task, which is fine. The purpose of the sentences is to show how the *-ous* ending changes words to be "describing words*."*

Students do touch and read the words in the second part of the task.
