This task introduces the letter combination oy as in joy.
This is the first time students are asked to read -VCe pattern words with an -ed suffix.
This is the first task in which the ow letter combination appears in story text (underlined for now).
This task introduces the verb endings ‑ing and -ed. Students learn that -ing indicates that something is still happening and that -ed indicates that something already happened (verb tenses).
In the first part of the task, students see two columns of word pairs. The left column has words that end with -ing and the right has those words ending with -ed. You ask students to notice what the words on the left have in common with each other and then what the words on the right have in common with each other.
In the second part of the task, you present those word pairs one by one, telling the students each word and reading its corresponding example sentence. Students do not repeat or read the words in the second part. For the first word pair, you tell the students the meaning of the endings. For each word pair after that, you tell students to point to a word, or you ask them a question, in order to demonstrate understanding of what those endings mean.
In the third part of the task, students touch and read new word pairs with those endings.
